The entrance to Monte Bello Open Space Preserve parking lot and trailhead. Well marked! A view of the first mile of the hike (in Nov) Around the 2-4 miles, the path is mostly shaded, and full of fall leaves (in Nov). On the Canyon Trail in Monte Bello, it eventually leaves Palo Alto, and there's a sign to mark the border!
The uphill portion of the hike on Indian Creek Trail and Canyon Trail intersection. Also unshaded. A good workout. The continued uphill portion (looking back) of the hike on Indian Creek Trail and Canyon Trail intersection. Also unshaded. A good workout. From the Black Mountain Backpack camp, there is a view of the SF Bay over hills. Hope for a clear day!

Travel Tips:

What is the approximate cost per person (with examples)?
  • Access to the open preserve is free and the trailhead is free!
Is there a minimum fitness requirement (i.e. Lots of stairs to climb)?
  • The hike isn't easy, but I'd consider it moderate. The route is unpaved and depending on your route can get steep.
How long did you spend (in hours)?
  • We spent about ~3 hours and hiked 10.9 miles.
How many times have you visited?
  • This was our first visit, and would return with more hikers or even consider trying mountain biking.
What is the dress code?
  • For a hike, dress in something comfortable. During the spring months, there are notices for poison ivy, so long pants may be preferred.
What form of transportation did you take?
  • We drove to the trailhead along a windy road and parked in parking lot (no street parking). Hike our route and drove out!
Is it kid friendly?
  • We did see kids, but most of them were older, and mountain biking.
